Seed Starter Mix Recipe
We started making our own seed starting mix considering that the small 1.5 cubic bag of organic mix costs $8. Making your own seed starting mix is easy, cost effective, and minimizes the hassle of running out and having to buy more. Try out our recipe- it works for us!
Seed Starter Mix Ingredients
- 2 parts peat moss
- 1 part perlite
- 1 part vermiculite
- Dolomite lime, diluted in water! (add according to how much you have of everything above and box directions)
Example for an 8-gallon Seed Starter Mix:
- 4 gallons peat moss
- 2 gallons perlite
- 2 gallons vermiculite
- ¼ cup dolomite lime
Make sure to dilute the dolomite lime in water before adding to your mix. Dolomite lime is a pH adjuster.
Using cement trays is a great way to mix your ingredients thoroughly.
Wet the seed starting mix before filling pots and trays.
Potting Mix Recipe
Once you’ve made your seed starting mix, making potting mix, for when you need it, is easy! Here’s the totally simple recipe:
Potting Mix Ingredients
- 1 part Seed Starting Mix (from above)
- 1 part garden soil
Again, using cement trays is a great way to mix your ingredients thoroughly.
Wet the potting mix first before filling pots.
