Ahh, Ali Baba Watermelon Infused Vodka

  • About a pint, more or less, of vodka (any brand you prefer)
  • Half of a fresh medium sized watermelon cubed- I used a little less than half of our homegrown Ali Baba watermelon
  • Fresh watermelon juice

Sweet, juicy, crisp watermelon in your hands on a sultry summer day sounds sublime. How sublime do the torrents of sticky juice pouring down your forearms, and the half moon rind sliming the sides of your face as you take those very last bites sound? Hmmm….well, that depends on what you prefer, and how fast you want that watermelon. But if you would rather enjoy watermelon differently, simply, skipping the ongoing mess, or storage of large uneaten slices, then watermelon juice may be a better option (see my instructions for Simple Watermelon Juice). Best, though, is using half of a watermelon for juice and the other half for something else, like infusing it with vodka.

First, cube about half of a medium watermelon or a whole small watermelon and place the chunks in a glass container.   I used a wide mouthed glass liter bottle with a snap lid.

Pour enough vodka in the bottle so it covers all of the watermelon chunks.

Place the cap on and shake slowly from one end to the other or stir and let it sit in a dry room temperature or cool place for about a week. I let mine sit for seven days.

After about a week, strain the vodka out and pour it back into a clean glass bottle (or the one you just used, sans watermelon chunks).

Put the remaining watermelon chunks in the blender and about half of a cup of water and blend. Strain the crushed seeds from the mixture by pouring into a metal strainer over a container.  Pour the strained blended watermelon mixture into ice trays and freeze.

For watermelon juice, blend chunks of fresh watermelon in the blender.  Strain the juice to get rid of the seeds.  Store the watermelon juice in refrigerator.  Makes a highly coveted refreshing drink!

Store the watermelon infused vodka in the refrigerator rather than the freezer. The water from the watermelon will cause the liquor to turn into half frozen slush in the freezer.

Once the blended watermelon is frozen, or in solid slush form, pop the cubes out of the trays and store them in a gallon size zip lock bag in the freezer for drinks later on.

Suggestions:

For one simply blended alcohol beverage- blend a couple of watermelon vodka ice cubes with two shots of watermelon infused vodka, a splash of watermelon juice, and a couple of mint leaves. Pour into a cute martini glass with a sugar rim, short wide straw, and a mint leaf garnish.  Happy sipping!
